The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced that it will begin lifting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the Dangote Refinery on September 15, 2024. 

In a statement, NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye shared that Adedapo Segun, the Executive Vice President of the company’s Downstream division, revealed this date during an appearance on TVC News’ Journalists’ Hangout show. Segun emphasised that NNPCL is prepared to adhere to the timeline set by the Lagos-based refinery, which has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

Segun’s remarks come amid ongoing fuel shortages across the country, despite recent price increases. He assured that NNPCL is working closely with fuel marketers to ensure that gas stations operate extended hours, opening early and closing late to maintain a steady fuel supply for Nigerians.

“We are also in discussions with relevant authorities to prevent product diversions and to guarantee timely deliveries to all stations. The scarcity is expected to ease in the coming days as more stations adjust and resume full operations,” Segun stated. 

This announcement follows a denial by the Dangote Refinery on Wednesday that NNPCL had begun lifting petrol from their facility. The clarification came shortly after Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, officially announced that the refinery had commenced production.

Dangote refinery sets petrol production targets for September, October

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that amidst Nigeria's petrol shortage, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) announced that Dangote Refinery will deliver an initial 25 million litres of petrol to the local market this September, with plans to ramp up production to 30 million litres daily starting in October 2024.

This was disclosed on its X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, September 3.  The statement read, “At the NMDPRA headquarters in Abuja, NNPCL reached an agreement to commence crude oil sale and supply to Dangote Refinery in local currency.
