The rise of cryptocurrency and mining activities has recently captured the attention of many Nigerians.

The enticing promise of rapid returns has led many to become passionate traders and miners, raising concerns in professional environments.

In a recent move, the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe (FTH) has implemented a ban on employees engaging in cryptocurrency trading or mining during working hours.

FTH sees crypto trend as distraction impacting patient care

FTH’s Deputy Director of Administration, Adamu Usman Tela, provided an explanation for the directive during an interview on Trust Radio on Thursday, September 19.

Tela said, “We took this step even before receiving any complaints, because taking care of the public health is the first thing.”

The hospital administration stated that they have recognised this trend as a distraction affecting workers' ability to care for patients effectively.

Management deploys security officers to ensure compliance

The hospital's internal circular emphasised that employees are free to engage in various activities while not on duty.

“The Management has already deployed SERVICOM, ACTU, and security officers around to monitor and ensure compliance with the directives,” the circular read in part.

Reactions to the ban among the public have varied widely. While some viewed it as a means to make ends meet, others questioned its impact on the patients, and productivity.

A user on X, formerly Twitter said, “😂😂 One road no dey lead to market na.”

Another X user, Daniel Preiz said, “Setting priority right is quite difficult for some people. How does that affect productivity.”

Marphy replied saying, “How does it not? Imagine the Doctor or Nurse that was suppose to attend to you was busy on his phone mining cryptocurrency?”
