The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has delivered a stark message to President Ahmed Tinubu, asserting that Nigerians are "suffering deeply" under his administration.

The council has urged the president to prioritise addressing the immediate needs of the populace before pursuing long-term goals.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 4, Chief Oladipo Oyewole, Secretary General of the YCE, emphasised the acute distress faced by millions of Nigerians who are struggling with a lack of food, fuel, and electricity.

The elders called for the government to refocus its efforts on providing immediate relief and comfort to the people.

“The current state of hardship across the country is undeniable,” said Oyewole. “While we remain hopeful for a positive turnaround, the information available about the government's activities suggests that many are suffering significantly.”

The statement continued, “Without reliable electricity and with the recent increase in the price of petroleum products (PMS), the daily struggles of Nigerians are bound to intensify.”

The YCE further advocated for effective governance measures that would deliver tangible benefits to the citizens rather than relying solely on palliative measures that may not reach those in need.

“The Federal Government should explore every possible avenue to ensure that the dividends of democracy are realised, enhancing the quality of life through effective administration,” the statement read.

The elders further emphasised that every Nigerian deserves to benefit from the nation’s resources.

The absence of basic necessities such as light, fuel, and food is causing profound suffering. Mr President must urgently revisit his plans to address the immediate needs of the people while continuing to work towards long-term improvements,” the YCE urged.

The council called for immediate action to improve the welfare of Nigerians, stressing that effective governance is essential for ensuring that citizens can live dignified and comfortable lives.

The current situation is a bitter pill to swallow. President Tinubu’s administration must act swiftly to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians and steer its intentions towards better governance and relief for all,” the statement added.
