Nationwide blackout as Nigeria’s national grid collapses again.Nigeria faces another blackout as the national grid collapses.
  • Nigeria experiences its second national grid collapse in 2025, leading to widespread blackouts
  • Electricity generation fell from 4,064MW to 1,203MW and completely crashed to 0.00MW
  • The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the outage and assured customers that power restoration efforts were ongoing

For the second time in 2025, Nigeria has been plunged into darkness following another national power grid collapse on Wednesday, February 12.

According to data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org), the grid failure occurred around 11:30 a.m.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to disclose the cause of the disturbance.

Confirming the outage, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) stated that the system disturbance happened at 11:34 a.m., leading to widespread power outages across its coverage areas.

“We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas.

“While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised,” AEDC announced in a statement on X.

Similarly, a popular X account tracking the Nigerian National Grid confirmed the collapse, stating, “There was a ‘GRID DISTURBANCE’ before noon today (Wednesday). Parts of the country experienced an outage.”

This latest incident follows a previous grid collapse on January 11, 2025.

The national power system has suffered from persistent instability, recording 12 collapses in 2024 alone and over 100 in the past decade.

Reports indicate that most power plants connected to the grid lost generation capacity when the collapse occurred.

At 11 a.m., the grid was generating 4,064 megawatts, but this dropped sharply to 1,203MW by noon and completely crashed to 0.00MW by 1 p.m.

On its X handle, AEDC reassured customers that gradual power restoration was underway and promised to work with stakeholders to stabilise the grid.

Grid loses 1,800MW as vandals damage 2 transmission towers

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the national grid suffered a significant setback, losing 1,800 megawatts (MW) of electricity due to the destruction of two transmission towers along the vital 330 kV Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines.

The incident, confirmed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in a statement released on October 18, underscores ongoing challenges posed by vandalism to Nigeria's energy infrastructure.
