1. Tinubu shelves 79th UNGA for domestic challenges: President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly session in New York this year.

Tinubu “wants to focus on domestic issues and address some of the country’s challenges, especially after the recent devastating flooding,” a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, revealed on September 19.

2. Fx crisis: PZ Cussons to sell Nigerian subsidiaries, others: Multinational consumer goods company PZ Cussons says it plans to sell its African subsidiaries to any interested buyer. The parent company of PZ Cussons Nigeria said it is looking at a partial or complete sale to mitigate the company’s exposure to fluctuations in the naira, which has devalued by 70 per cent.

The company stated this in its preliminary results published on its website for the year ended May 31, 2024.

3. Fed govt announces low-key 64th Independence celebration: The Federal Government has said this year’s Independence Day celebration on October 1 will be a subdued affair to reflect the nation’s sober mood.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, announced this while inaugurating an inter-ministerial committee to plan the event on September 19.

4. NECO invites 40 schools over mass cheating in SSCE: The National Examination Council (NECO) announced on September 19 that it will be inviting and interrogating the management of 40 secondary schools across 17 states for alleged mass cheating in this year’s Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

NECO Registrar Prof. Dantani Wushishi disclosed this at a press conference in Minna, Niger State capital, where he announced the release of the 2024 SSCE results.

5. INEC unveils new guidelines for recall of elected officials: The Independent National Electoral Commission has released new policies and regulations for the recall of elected officials at both state and federal levels.

This announcement was made on September 19 by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.
