1. Nigerians not worse off than in 1960, says Presidency: The Presidency insists that Nigerians are not worse off today than they were at independence in 1960.
The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed comparisons between present-day GDP and that of 1960.
This was in response to AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina’s claim that Nigeria’s GDP per capita dropped from $1,847 in 1960 to $824 today.
Onanuga argued such comparisons lack context and do not reflect current economic realities.
2. INEC debunks voter registration resumption rumours: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied setting a date for the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).
In a statement shared on X by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, the commission urged the public to ignore a circulating message claiming CVR would resume on May 27, 2025.
INEC clarified that no official date has been announced yet for the exercise or related services like voter transfers and card replacements.
3. Nigerians should prepare for cost-reflective electricity tariffs – Minister: Nigerians should brace for an increase in electricity tariffs, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has said.
Speaking during a meeting with power generation company chairmen in Abuja, Adelabu stated that the economy can no longer sustain electricity subsidies.
He emphasised the need for cost-reflective tariffs to ensure long-term sustainability in the power sector.
4. Davido demands release of VeryDarkMan: Afrobeats sensation Davido has called for the release of social media activist VeryDarkMan, who was recently detained.
