5 issues in the news that should matter to you today

1. Okpebholo welcomes PDP defector, launches Tinubu's 2027 re-election campaign: Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has kicked off the re-election campaign for President Bola Tinubu ahead of 2027.

The announcement came as he received Kaycee Osamwonyi, a member of the Edo State House of Assembly representing Uhunmwonde Constituency, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Osamwonyi was officially welcomed by the state APC Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe.

2. FG to launch e-visa system, digital travel cards: The Federal Government is set to roll out an electronic visa (e-visa) system and digital landing/exit cards to bolster national security and improve immigration procedures.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, revealed the plans during a meeting with Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo in Abuja.

The e-visa will allow travelers to apply online and upload necessary documents digitally.

3. Trump suspends tariffs for most nations, escalates trade war with China: US President Donald Trump has temporarily paused tariff hikes for most countries for 90 days, citing successful negotiations with over 75 nations.

However, he intensified trade pressure on China, introducing more levies in what continues to be a fierce economic standoff between the two global powers.

4. South Korea rolls out $2 billion relief for carmakers amid US tariffs: In response to US President Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on automobile imports, South Korea has unveiled a $2 billion emergency aid package for its auto industry.

The government warned that the tariffs pose a major threat to its economy, as vehicles and auto parts remain the country’s top exports to the United States.

5. FG mandates tertiary institutions to publicly advertise vacancies: The Federal Ministry of Education has instructed all federal tertiary institutions to publicly advertise job vacancies. Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa said the directive is part of a broader initiative to ensure transparency, equity, and integrity in recruitment across the education sector.
