1. Court nullifies Rivers PDP congresses: A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Monday, January 13, nullified the ward, local government, and state congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Justice Stephen Jumbo gave the ruling in an interlocutory injunction following a suit brought before the court by two legal practitioners based in Port Harcourt, Edwin Woko and Love Otuonye, and two others who are members of the PDP.
2. Depots raise petrol price to N950/litre: The loading cost of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and other refined petroleum products at the depots increased on Monday.
It was gathered that marketers raised petrol and diesel prices at depots by N43 or 4.74 per cent due to the rising crude oil prices.
This current situation indicates that filling stations nationwide may adjust their pump prices to reflect the higher costs of refined products.
3. Again, Boko Haram strikes in Borno, kills 40, abducts scores: At least 40 farmers have been reportedly killed in the Dumba community in the Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, with the whereabouts of several others yet to be ascertained following an attack by the terrorists believed to be members of Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West African Province.
It was gathered that the attack, which happened around 4:30 pm on Sunday, January 12, also left dozens of farmers missing who may have been abducted by the militants.
Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, confirmed the attack in a statement on Monday, January 13.
4. NCC to name defaulting banks over N200bn USSD debt: This week, the Nigerian Communications Commission will publicly release the names of 18 banks that have failed to settle their outstanding debts for using Mobile Network Operators’ Unstructured Supplementary Service Data platforms.
These banks collectively owe a total of N200bn, and the telecom regulator is preparing to take action, including suspending USSD services for the defaulters.
5. Earthquake strikes Japan, tsunami warning issued: A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan late on Monday, January 13, causing two small tsunamis in the area but no damage was reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned of possible tsunami waves of up to one metre (three feet) and urged the public to stay away from coastal waters.
