The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the death of four individuals in a violent attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits in Gumki village, Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

In a statement released on January 11, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, shared details of the attack on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Sani.

The victims included a local resident and three staff members of Airtel Communications Nigeria Limited. 

The Airtel employees were working on a surveillance mast installation for the Nigeria Immigration Service when the attack occurred.

According to the statement, the bandits struck at a construction site in Gumki, a village along the Nigeria-Niger Republic border, on January 10, 2025, around 8:47 p.m. The assailants killed four individuals before fleeing the scene.

Upon receiving the report, CP Bello Sani, along with Kebbi State Comptroller of Immigration, CIS Muhammad Bashir Lawali, visited the site. 

The bodies of the victims were later evacuated to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital in Birnin Kebbi.

“On receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, CP Bello M. Sani, alongside the Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kebbi State Command, CIS Muhammad Bashir Lawali, swiftly mobilised to the scene and evacuated the corpses to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi,” the statement read.

In response to the incident, CP Sani reviewed the security measures in the area and deployed additional tactical teams to counter the bandits' activities. He also directed the teams to take decisive action against the perpetrators.

“The CP charged the tactical teams to decisively deal with suspected Lakurawa bandits operating in the area,” the statement added.

To foster security and restore peace, CP Sani convened a meeting with key stakeholders in the community. 

He urged residents to cooperate with security forces by providing timely, accurate information to facilitate swift responses to security threats.

The attack underscores ongoing concerns about banditry in the region, with authorities pledging enhanced efforts to safeguard lives and property.

4 NSCDC officers killed in Boko Haram ambush, 1 missing

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were confirmed dead following an ambush by Boko Haram insurgents on Monday, November 18, 2024. 

The attack occurred during an inspection tour of the national grid installations in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State. One officer was missing, while two others returned to base unscathed.
