Kano, Edo postpone resumption for schools indefinitely, give reasons

Just like in many other areas, primary and secondary schools in Kano and Edo states have enjoyed a month-long break and are scheduled to resume on Monday, September 9.

However, the resumption date for both primary and secondary schools in Kano State has been postponed indefinitely by the state government for the beginning of the 2024/2025 academic session.

Edo blames petrol hike for school closures 

While Edo pointed to the recent increase in petrol prices as the reason for its decision, the Kano government only mentioned “urgent reasons” without providing further details.

In a statement on Saturday, September 7, the Edo State Government reported that the hike in petrol prices and the challenges encountered by parents and guardians have created tension, prompting the decision to keep all schools in the state closed.

“The government urges parents, guardians and caregivers to monitor the activities of their children and wards closely, given the current situation and the rising tension caused by the fuel hike,” Ojo Akin-Longe, the permanent secretary in the education ministry, disclosed.

Kano postpones school resumption indefinitely 

The postponement in Kano was also revealed in a statement released on Saturday, September 7, by Balarabe Kiru, the Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry of Education.

He stated that the Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa, attributed the decision to some unspecified 'urgent reasons.'

Kiru conveyed that Doguwa indicated the ministry would release a new date soon.

“I wish to inform pupils, students and parents that the announcement earlier made for school resumption on 8th and 9th Sept 2024 is now being postponed.

Kano cites “urgent reasons” for resumption postponement

“This is due to some urgent reasons that will help in improving the provision of a conducive learning atmosphere for our children.

“Another date for the resumption will be announced in due course,” the Director stated.

He appealed to the students, parents, and guardians to show understanding and patience regarding any inconveniences caused by the rescheduled timeline.

Both states have not yet specified a new date for resumption, but they have assured that it will be announced in due course.

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the Federal Government had clarified that it did not impose an age restriction on students taking the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). 

Dr Tanko Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, clarified the age requirements for admission into tertiary institutions and the 6:3:3:4 education system.
