- FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has revoked land allocations of 568 governors and political figures over non-payment of bills
- This was done after the FCT Ministry gave the defaulting parties multiple grace periods
- The revocation aligned with Section 28 of the Land Use Act of 1978, reinforcing the importance of fulfilling payment obligations for land allocations
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revoked the land allocations of several governors and political figures.
Among the 568 individuals affected are Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri; Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma; Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele; and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
Other prominent Nigerians on the list include former Enugu State governor Chimaroke Nnamani, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and Honourable Oluwole Oke, a federal lawmaker representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency.
According to Lere Olayinka, the media aide to the minister, the revocation of the Right of Occupancy (R-of-O) for the 568 land allottees follows the expiration of an additional two-week grace period given to settle their Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) bills.
The original notice issued in early October 2024 informed the 3,273 allottees that they had two weeks to pay their bills or risk losing their titles. While 2,511 of them complied, 762 remained non-compliant.
An additional two-week grace period was provided, but by January 15, 2025, only 194 of the remaining allottees had made payments, leaving 568 individuals whose land allocations were subsequently revoked.
The official notice of withdrawal, signed by the FCT Administration, reminded the allottees that failure to meet payment obligations led to the revocation of their Right of Occupancy, in line with Section 28 of the Land Use Act of 1978.
The statement clarified that any allottees who completed their payments before the January 15 deadline were not affected by the revocation.
Wike criticises Jonathan's lack of support amidst local government election tensions
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that former governor of Rivers State and incumbent minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, voiced his frustrations regarding the lack of support from his political ally, Goodluck Jonathan.
Wike’s comments came when Rivers State was preparing for local government elections, threatening to further heighten political tension in the state.
