Reactions have continued to flood in following the death of Adetunji Opayele, also known as Teejay, the co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Bumpa, who tragically passed away on March 4 after an accident that raised widespread concerns over negligence and disregard for life.
A public outcry for justice has emerged, with a petition on Change.org gaining over 13,000. The petition, shared by multiple users on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, March 29, outlined the details surrounding Opayele's death.
Driver Biola Adams-Odutayo reportedly refused to help Teejay
According to the petition, Opayele, who had the right of way, had just exited the iFitness gym in Victoria Island and was riding along Ozumba Mbadiwe at approximately 10:20 p.m. when Biola Adams-Odutayo, driving a vehicle with the license plate LND 418 JR, merged onto the expressway without checking for oncoming traffic, resulting in a crash.
Despite being fully equipped with safety gear, Opayele was knocked unconscious and left lying on the road. The petition claimed that Adams-Odutayo did not attempt to check on him after the accident.
Bystanders rushed to his aid, pleading with Adams-Odutayo to assist, but she reportedly refused. One bystander claimed that when they approached her friend, they were told, "She doesn’t want blood to stain her car."
As Opayele lay unconscious but still breathing, Adams-Odutayo, who was a healthcare professional and the Head of Health at a prominent insurance brokering firm, was said to have continued a phone call for over 30 minutes instead of offering help.
The petition further described the desperate attempts by bystanders to transport Opayele to a hospital, with several cars refusing to stop. Eventually, an Uber driver agreed to assist, but both hospitals the group visited refused to admit him.
Petition calls for justice following Teejay's death
In a final attempt to save his life, the group returned to the scene and placed him in a minibus, forcing Adams-Odutayo to accompany them. The petition stated that she only stayed at the scene because bystanders physically prevented her from leaving, especially after she had reportedly arranged for her car to be towed away.
Opayele was, however, pronounced dead, just after midnight at the hospital. The petition also claimed that after Opayele’s death, Adams-Odutayo walked into the hospital, requested a drip, and claimed to be in shock before attempting to leave.
"Biola Adams-Odutayo was detained for only one night at the police station, and her whereabouts remained unknown for several days until she was charged in court with reckless driving," the petition reads in part.
"Her bail was set at N1 million and two sureties, which she met on the same day. Since then, she has been comfortably at home, enjoying her freedom."
The petition also noted that Biola Adams-Odutayo was summoned by the police on March 17, but she failed to show up. The petitioners demanded that she should be charged with manslaughter rather than reckless driving.
TheRadar has compiled several public reactions, which have continued to express outrage and demand justice for Teejay Opayele below.
