The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has stressed the importance of mutual love and understanding between political leaders and Nigerians as a vital step toward advancing the nation.
In his message to Muslims celebrating Eid-el-Fitr, the revered monarch called for renewed commitment to both the Creator and to the welfare of mankind.
The royal statement, issued by the Alaafin's Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, encouraged Nigerians to reflect on the gift of life and to embrace values such as tolerance and contentment.
Oba Owoade highlighted that true devotion to Allah is at the heart of the Eid celebration, emphasising that love for one another is the key to a prosperous and harmonious society.
“If we genuinely love from our hearts, governance will improve, electoral reforms will be more achievable, funds will be spent responsibly for the greater good, and leadership will nurture and protect the people, This is the core message of the festival, which I urge all Nigerians and humanity at large to embrace,” said Oba Owoade.
The monarch went on to stress the importance of a love that transcends personal interests, advocating for a love that liberates, empowers, and uplifts society.
This year’s Eid-el-Fitr falls at a particularly poignant moment, with Nigeria grappling with the effects of an ongoing economic recession that has left millions of citizens struggling. Oba Owoade noted that this makes the call for compassion and solidarity even more urgent.
“The timing of this year’s festival is especially significant, given the economic recession and its far-reaching effects on millions of Nigerians. It highlights the urgent need for adherents of Islam to look beyond themselves and their immediate circles, particularly during this holy season,” he remarked.
The Alaafin also urged philanthropists to take time to consider the plight of the less fortunate in their communities.
“The lessons of Eid-el-Fitr are straightforward: by addressing the needs of the poor, we acknowledge the welfare of others as equal to our own. Sharing our material wealth honours the One (God) who made such provisions available to us,” he explained.
In a final message, Oba Owoade reminded Nigerians to remain focused on the true significance of the occasion and the spirit of sacrifice that it represents. With millions of displaced individuals within the country, the meaning of Eid-el-Fitr has taken on added importance this year.
“This occasion should go beyond mere celebration. It is an opportunity to share love and material blessings not just with family and friends, but with the displaced, the elderly, orphans, and all those on the margins of society, including individuals with special needs,” the monarch further stated.
Alaafin of Oyo-designate returns from Canada ahead of April coronation
Earlier TheRadar reported that the Alaafin of Oyo-designate, Oba Akeem Owoade, has arrived in Nigeria after spending approximately seven weeks in Canada.
The monarch-elect touched down at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Ikeja on Wednesday evening and is expected to make his way to his ancestral home in Oyo town later today Thursday, March 6.
Owoade's return comes just under a month before his eagerly anticipated coronation as the 45th Alaafin of Oyo, set for April 5.
