Natasha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, a former Big Brother Naija housemate, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan's sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In a video posted on Friday, March 6, Tacha called out Nigerians for their nonchalant attitude towards the issue, emphasising that it is being taken too lightly.
Tacha highlighted the gravity of the situation, pointing out that if Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is lying, it sets a dangerous precedent for false accusations. On the other hand, if she's telling the truth, it means men can get away with harassing women.
She stated,
“I think we can all agree that Nigerians are not very serious people. This is what the political class understands and that is why they can do anything and get away with it.
“You guys don't understand the gravity of what just happened, if Senator is lying, it means women can wake up and accuse anyone for sexual harassment, and maen can rape and sexually harass women and get away with it.”
She criticised Nigerians, particularly self-proclaimed feminists, for not standing up for women's rights and being selective in their activism.
“This is the time to take the bull by the horn, do you know what the international Women's Day theme is? “March forward for all women and girls.” Why are women not matching? The so confusing individuals that call themselves Nigerian feminist, their voices are nowhere to be heard, but if it is to defend influencers, your voices will be heard.
“You are only a feminist when it benefits you. Both men and women are supposed to be at the senate assembly, asking questions to the extent that the president feels this.”
Tacha also expressed concern over the lack of representation and protection for women in Nigeria, with only four female senators out of 109.
“Women are not properly represented across the board, we have never had a female governor, this is how disenfranchised women are.”
Tacha urged Nigerians to take a stronger stance against sexual harassment and support women who come forward with allegations.
“If a female Senator is making an allegation such as this, it should not be swept under the carpet or treated slightly, and if she is telling a lie, then she should be dealt with.”
The number three citizen in Nigeria is facing allegations such as this, this needs to be cleared.”
She also expressed concern about Nigeria, questioning,
“where did we get it wrong in this 2025? If a woman of that level is struggling to get justice, then who am I and what is the fate of that average 18-year-old girl in Ibadan? Is this how we plan to stand for women? Nah! Disappointing to say the least.”
This controversy began when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio made unwanted sexual advances towards her in 2023. The Senate ethics committee rejected her petition, citing procedural rule violations, and she was subsequently suspended for six months.
