  • Numerous Nollywood titles were launched in 2024
  • Some films have hit hard with accolades while some have missed with lamentations from film lovers
  • Here are my top 5 Nollywood titles of 2024

Nollywood has proven that they didn't come to play in 2024 —with no months devoid of screen wonders to look forward to.

It has been a rollercoaster ride so far in the Nigerian film industry with numerous new releases but only few hit the mark for me.

On the basis of outstanding storytelling, Character delivery, cinematic direction and overall themes, here are my top 5 movies of 2024.

Top 5 Nollywood movies of 2024

  • Kill Boro - Number 5

Released in June 2024 and directed by Courage Obayuwana, Kill Boro approaches the prevalent issue of domestic violence from a fresh perspective. A young boy suffering from the brutality of his father against his mother turns to a notorious gang to kill his father—this is a suspenseful logline to keep you hooked. I like to believe that most times, stories are not totally new but the approach always stands out.

The character delivery for this film interpreted the roles as it ought. Starring as the lead, Philip Asaya, despite being unpopular in Nollywood, gave a stellar and memorable performance. Overall, the theme of domestic violence cannot be overlooked, from neighbours, to friends and families, a victim lurks in every corner.

  • Funmilayo Ransome Kuti - Number 4

Funmilayo Ransome Kuti by Nollywood ace director Bolanle Austen-Peters is another film that won my heart this year. A biopic about the life and times of Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, who is a renowned Nigerian activist and mother of Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti.

With Kehinde Bankole, as FRK, she wore the personality that every scene felt real. It is not every day that history is memorable and powerful in contemporary times. Bolanle Austen-Peters sure deserves her flowers.

  • What about Us - Number 3

What About Us follows the story of a busy and absent-minded husband and his wife navigating the terrain of a rocky marriage. A neighbour shows up to complicate things. Though cliche, I think the message and theme of the film made it my top 2. In a time, when marriages face the most trying times with communication and partners misunderstanding each other, this faith-based Nollywood film is relevant. Directed by Kayode Kasum, What About Us is that film for me this year.

  • The Weekend - Number 2

Away from romance, history and social issue themes, Daniel Oriah brings to life a horror/thriller genre, The Weekend, that leaves you stunned by the discoveries. This movie released in August starred Bucci Franklin, Amaka Aniunoh and Gloria Young, the embodiment of characters was beyond acting. I was particularly won by Amaka’s delivery of Nikiya —flawless, real and has a soul.

  • House of Ga’a - Number 1

The conqueror, the champion, the lion is here…Allow me to serenade this film because, for me, nothing comes close yet. Bolanle Austen-Peters and her cultural storytelling niche did it again with House of Ga’a. With Femi Branch as the outstanding lead act, the story documents the life of a tyrant and ruthless kingmaker during the Oyo empire. It is a film that, above its themes, preserves African culture and tradition.
