  • The family claims that his legal team was denied access to him for 20 days
  • Gambaryan has been detained for six months

The family of Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive detained in a prison on the outskirts of Nigeria’s federal capital, Aabuja, says his health condition has worsened, and he is now unable to walk again.

According to a statement released by the family on August 26, medical negligence by Nigerian prison officials and the Nigerian government is the reason why the Binance executive's health keeps getting worse.

“He is no longer able to walk from the pain of his untreated herniated disc or spinal injury. The prison is also refusing to provide him with a wheelchair,” the family said in the statement.

Now Gambaryan has to take blood thinners to prevent blood clots due to immobility. The family also claims that his legal team was denied access to him for 20 days, from July 26 to August 14, by the country's authorities.

“[Gambaryan] is now in so much pain from a herniated disc in his back that he can no longer walk. As he is bed-bound, he is having to take blood thinners to avoid blood clots and the prison doctor has said that his muscles have atrophied,” the family said.

The family said the restriction is against the Nigerian constitution and the governing laws of the prison where he is being held.

The authorities only granted Gambaryan's legal team a five-minute visit to assist them in preparing for trial before once again refusing them entry. Furthermore, according to the family, Gambaryan is unable to visit the US embassy to receive any assistance because no wheelchair is available.

"Tigran Gambaryan, my husband, a former US federal agent, has now been detained in a Nigerian prison for half a year. His health is deteriorating to the point where he can no longer walk and he is being inhumanely denied the use of a wheelchair. Between bouts of malaria, pneumonia, and the incredible mental toll of his detention, Tigran, who is usually so strong, is reaching a breaking point. He needs immediate medical treatment and risks permanent damage,” Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki, said in a video message.

"For six months, our living nightmare has been filled with pleas. Pleas to the U.S. government, pleas to the Nigerian government, pleas to the media, pleas to anyone who will listen. I am pleading for their mercy, for their understanding, for their humanity. My husband is innocent and needs to be released before it is too late and the damage done to him is irreversible. Six months is too long; please help me bring my husband home.”

How crypto scammers stole $55 million from trader via phishing

Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that a crypto trader has lost $55.47 million in DAI stablecoin to fraudsters via a phishing attack. This is according to the blockchain security platform Scam Sniffer.

In a post on X, the anti-scam firm said the trader lost the asset after they misappropriatedly transferred ownership of their collateralized debt position (CDP) on DeFi Saver Proxy—a proxy contract created by the DAI stablecoin's issuer to help traders manage their collateralized debt positions (CDPs)—to a malicious wallet.
