Turkey's Rumeysa Gelgi, the tallest woman in the world, is a living testament to resilience and empowerment. At just 24 years old, she holds five Guinness World Records, a remarkable feat that has catapulted her into international stardom. More than just her extraordinary height, Rumeysa is an advocate, a tech enthusiast, and a beacon of hope for individuals with rare conditions.
Recently, Rumeysa met with the world's shortest woman (Jyoti Amge) for an afternoon tea in London at the Savoy Hotel to celebrate Guinness World Records Day on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. The height difference between the two inspiring women is a massive 152.36 centimeters (5 feet).
From tallest teenager to world record-breaking woman
Born in Safranbolu, Turkey, Rumeysa's unique journey began in 2014 when, at 17 years old, she was recognised as the tallest teenager living, standing at 213.6 cm (7 ft 0.09 in). This marked the start of her record-breaking journey. By 2021, her height was officially measured at an awe-inspiring 215.16 cm (7 ft 0.7 in), securing her title as the tallest woman living.
Her records don’t stop there. She also holds titles for the longest finger (11.2 cm), largest hands (right hand: 24.93 cm, left hand: 24.26 cm), and the longest back (59.90 cm) on a living woman.
Rumeysa’s experience living with Weaver Syndrome
Rumeysa’s exceptional height is a result of Weaver Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that accelerates growth and affects various aspects of the body. Diagnosed as Turkey's first and the world’s 27th recorded case, she has faced significant health challenges, including scoliosis, spinal deformities, and mobility issues requiring a walker or wheelchair.
Despite these difficulties, Rumeysa’s strength is evident in her commitment to physiotherapy and swimming, which help maintain her health and mobility.
A tech enthusiast and self-taught developer
Rumeysa’s academic journey was unconventional due to her condition. Homeschooled throughout her education, she completed her studies and graduated high school in 2016. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 became a turning point when she pursued her childhood dream of working in the tech industry.
Now a certified front-end developer, she uses her technical skills to chart a career path in web development, proving that determination knows no bounds.
An advocate for positivity and awareness
Rumeysa’s towering stature has made her a global sensation, but her mission transcends her records. As an advocate for body positivity, she raises awareness about Weaver Syndrome and scoliosis, using her platform to educate and inspire others. Her candid discussions about the highs and lows of living with a rare condition resonate deeply with audiences worldwide.
In an era where superficial standards dominate social media, Rumeysa's authenticity shines as she encourages self-acceptance and celebrates diversity. “Every disadvantage can be turned into an advantage,” she says.
A voice for change
Rumeysa’s journey is a powerful reminder that physical uniqueness is a strength. Her X-ray images, featured in the 2018 #IAmStraightForward exhibition in New York, highlights the realities of living with scoliosis while contributing to scientific understanding.
Meeting her male counterpart
Interestingly, Rumeysa shares her Turkish heritage with Sultan Kösen, the world’s tallest man, standing at 246.5 cm (8 ft 1 in). Although they have not met, both record-holders represent a unique part of global history.
Embracing her potential
Rumeysa’s story is one of courage, ambition, and self-belief. Whether advocating for medical awareness, achieving professional milestones, or inspiring others to embrace their differences, she continues to redefine what it means to stand tall.
“Be aware of your potential,” she advises. Rumeysa Gelgi’s life is proof that standing out can be a powerful force for change.
