- Meta launches Edits app globally to rival TikTok in the creator economy space.
- It is available for free on iOS and Android, with AI tools, watermark-free exports, and advanced editing features
- Meta targets TikTok’s user base amid ongoing U.S. regulatory uncertainty
Meta has officially launched its latest creation, Edits, a free, all-in-one video editing app designed to go head-to-head with TikTok’s editing ecosystem and empower creators worldwide.
Now available on both iOS and Android, Edits offers a comprehensive set of tools tailored for short-form video production.
It features AI-powered editing, watermark-free exports, and a seamless user interface, all available for free at launch.
This move is a strategic part of Meta’s broader push to tap into the booming creator economy, especially as TikTok continues to face regulatory scrutiny in the United States.
Filling TikTok gap
The development of Edits began earlier this year, shortly after ByteDance’s CapCut was briefly removed from U.S. app stores amid tightening restrictions on TikTok.
While CapCut is now back, the uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future has opened the door for Meta to present itself as a viable alternative.
Although developed by Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, Edits is not limited to Meta’s platforms.
It’s designed to be platform-agnostic, allowing creators to craft content for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or any other video-sharing platform.
“We’re building the most compelling creative tools to help creators express themselves across any platform, not just on Instagram and Facebook,” the company said in a blog post on Tuesday, April 22.
Meta’s clear goal: make Edits the go-to video editing hub for all creators, regardless of where they post.
Power-packed features
One major draw is that Edits allows users to export videos without any watermark, a perk that TikTok’s CapCut only offers through its Pro (paid) version.
That alone gives Edits an edge with creators looking for pro-level tools without the price tag.
The app also includes:
- AI-driven green screen effects
- Precision timeline editing
- Auto-captions
- Access to trending audio and Instagram’s music library
- Animated still image transformation with AI
- Object tracking and isolation features
Plus, it lets creators brainstorm and manage multiple projects from one place.
What’s next?
Meta isn’t stopping here. The company teased several upcoming features, including:
- Modify: an AI-powered tool to completely change a video’s aesthetic
- Keyframes: for precise control over object movement and clip transformation
- Collaboration tools: to allow creators and brands to co-edit or review drafts
More fonts, filters, voice effects, and music are also on the way to bulk up the creative toolkit.
While Edits is free for now, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has hinted that premium features might eventually roll out as paid options.
Creator incentives on the rise
This isn’t Meta’s first attempt to woo TikTok creators.
Earlier this year, they reportedly offered influencers up to $50,000 per month to post exclusively on Instagram.
The company also introduced a separate bonus initiative, paying creators up to $5,000 for consistently posting on Instagram and Facebook.
Meta unveils $65 billion AI investment plan for 2025
Meanwhile, TheRadar earlier reported that the global tech giant Meta announced an ambitious plan to invest up to $65 billion to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and accelerate groundbreaking innovation in the field.
By 2025, it aimed to have its AI assistant serve over 1 billion users and launch Llama 4 as the leading state-of-the-art model.
