- Awoniyi’s position in the Super Eagles squad could be at risk under new coach Eric Chelle, who may favour in-form players
Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has thrown his full support behind Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, expressing confidence in the player’s ability to rediscover his top form despite limited game time this season.
Awoniyi, who has been linked with a January move away from the City Ground, is reportedly on the radar of West Ham United and other clubs seeking a striker before the transfer window closes.
Awoniyi has struggled for minutes this season, making just two Premier League starts and two additional appearances in domestic cup competitions.
However, Espirito Santo dismissed rumours of an imminent transfer and praised Awoniyi’s talent, dedication, and importance to Nottingham Forest,
“Taiwo came on late in the game against Liverpool after a good performance against Luton. We hope he progresses with his fitness because we know his talent and quality. He’s a goalscorer who always makes an impact and creates chances,” Espirito Santo said.
Despite the speculation, Espirito Santo stressed that Awoniyi remains a valuable asset to Forest’s ambitions,
“Taiwo works very hard and understands the importance of being patient. He knows the team’s success comes first. I am confident he will return to his best form,” the manager added.
West Ham’s interest in Awoniyi has reportedly intensified following injuries to their key strikers, Michael Antonio and Nikolas Fullkrug. Both players face extended spells on the sidelines, leaving the Hammers in urgent need of a forward.
Awoniyi’s potential move could offer him the opportunity for regular playing time, a factor that might also influence his standing in the Super Eagles squad under new coach Eric Chelle.
Espirito Santo acknowledged the competition within Forest’s squad, noting that Chris Wood’s strong performances have limited Awoniyi’s starting opportunities. However, the manager emphasised that the Nigerian striker’s moment will come,
“Taiwo’s role right now may not be as a starter, but he is making vital contributions when called upon. He scored against Wolves to seal the game, and that’s the mentality we need. Whether he’s on the pitch from the first minute or the last, Taiwo is focused and ready,” Espirito Santo affirmed.
With three weeks left in the January transfer window, Awoniyi’s future remains uncertain. However, Espirito Santo’s unwavering belief in the striker’s abilities suggests that Forest may be reluctant to part ways with a player who has proven his worth in the past and could yet play a crucial role in their campaign.
